Wall back fill is complete

Image
After a long two months we are nearly finished the retaining wall! It has been a complicated process given that we have gone beyond specifications to add many more weep holes, three ag-drains, and a myriad of additional drains to remove the surface water from the gutter on top of the wall. The gutter itself will be able to carry about fifteen times the volume of the engineer's specified gutter, and will aslo double as a foot path. The gutter will be formed up this week and poured later in the week all being well. Today we finished the back-fill of aggregate. It is such a relief to get to this stage, so that now at last the house and shed build can proceed because we have secured the site. Here are today's pic's.

About half the metal framework has been fabricated. There is a lot of it! We are in a race against time to back fill the retaining wall. It is these sorts of falls that the wall will hold back. This was a small but annoying bit of collapsed shale that I had to shovel out by hand. It was greasy with mud as well. This occured after just half an inch of rain. At least we have back-filled about half the wall with three quarters of the aggregate.

I took the drone for a spin last Monday, a few days after the house was poured. Behind retaining wall is ready for laying drainage pipes and aggregate backfill. Geo-fabric is in temporary place and will wrap aggregate.

Mechanical help

My latest acquisition will be a big help in the garden, particularly planting in the rocky soil. It comes complete with a bucket, back hoe and slasher. It will also be useful at times during the build.

Out of the ground!

We're out of the ground! The house slab has been pured at last. Onwards and upwards!

Wall backfill has begun

The backfilling of the retaining wall has begun, now that waterproofing is complete. We are putting in a couple of Ag-pipe drains covered with 20mm aggregate. So far 40 cubic metres of aggregate has been delivered, and we may need more with the 88 metre long wall. The aggregate with agg-pipes will be wrapped in geo-fabric to keep the silt out but let the water in.
